30 years of research on insect galls in Brazil: a scientometric review Pap. Avulsos de Zool. (São Paulo)
Araújo,Walter Santos de.
Abstract The first systematic studies on insect galls in Brazil date to the early 20th century, after which research on insect galls remained dormant in the country, with interest not reviving until the 1980s. The aim of this study was is to document historical trends in publications about insect galls in Brazil over the last 30 years. Papers about insect galls and galling species in Brazil published in peer-reviewed journals from 1988 to 2017 were compiled. A total of 1,378 papers were analyzed, of which 182 addressed insect galls in Brazil. The results showed that the number of publications on the subject has been increasing over the last 30 years, and especially in the last decade. The diversity of journals that published on the subject has also been...

A new methodology for large-scale screening sugarcane resistance to Mahanarva Fimbriolata (Hemiptera: Cercopidae) Bragantia
Valverde,Alejandro Hipólito Pabón; Soares,Bruno Oliveira; Tomaz,Adriano Cirino; Pimentel,Guilherme Vieira; Peternelli,Luiz Alexandre; Barbosa,Márcio Henrique Pereira.
ABSTRACT The sugarcane spittlebug, Mahanarva fimbriolata (Walker) (Hemiptera: Cercopidae) is an economically important pest of sugarcane in Brazil. The purpose of this study was to develop and validate a greenhouse methodology to screen large sugarcane populations for resistance to spittlebug Mahanarva fimbriolata. A resistant and a susceptible genotype (H. Kawandang and SP81-3250) were first used to determine adequate days after infestation and levels of infestation (number of nymphs per plant) for comparing the resistance of genotypes. Then, 74 sugarcane genotypes including three susceptible and three resistant controls were screened for resistance. The screening method consists in infesting single-tiller plants supported in a small plant growth unit and...

Characterization of insect galls from a vegetation area in Altinópolis, São Paulo State, Brazil Pap. Avulsos de Zool. (São Paulo)
Ribeiro,Amanda das Neves; Balbi,Maria Isabel Protti de Andrade; Urso-Guimarães,Maria Virginia.
Abstract Herein, we studied the occurrence of insect galls from natural vegetation around the Itambé Cave, Altinópolis, SP, Brazil. A sampling effort of 7.5 hours resulted in 41 gall morphotypes on 21 host plant species from 14 families. The richest families of host plants in morphotypes were Fabaceae (N = 11), Euphorbiaceae (N = 7), and Malpighiaceae (N = 5). Copaifera langsdorffii Desf. (N = 8), Croton floribundus Spreng. (N = 7), Diplopterys pubipetala (A. Juss.) W.R. Anderson & C.C. Davis (N = 5), and Bauhinia holophylla (Bong.) Steud. (N = 4) were the super host plant species. Among the gall makers obtained, cecidomyiids were reared in 81% of cases and Hemiptera (Diaspididae), Hymenoptera (Eurytomidae), Coleoptera (Apion sp./Apionidae), and...

Coffee leaf miner resistance Braz. J. Plant Physiol.
Guerreiro Filho,Oliveiro.
The coffee leaf miner, Leucoptera coffeella, is a common pest of coffee plantations in Brazil. Though it is effective, chemical control substantially increases the cost of production and constitutes a significant risk for the environment. Resistant coffee cultivars have been and continue being developed through classic and molecular selection techniques. Basic knowledge about the biology of this insect, the damage it causes to the plants, the identification of sources of resistance, the development of efficient selection methods and knowledge about the genetics of resistance have contributed to the efficiency of the ongoing genetic improvement programs. Recently, coffee genomics studies have also promoted an improvement in the efficiency of the development...

Distribution of insect galls in xeric and mesic habitats of Floresta Nacional de Silvânia, Brazil Iheringia, Sér. Zool.
Bergamini,Bárbara Araújo Ribeiro; Bergamini,Leonardo Lima; Santos,Benedito Baptista dos; Araújo,Walter Santos de.
ABSTRACT We investigated the insect gall distribution along savanna (xeric) and forest (mesic) vegetation in the Floresta Nacional de Silvânia, Goiás, Brazil. We tested if the insect gall diversity is higher in the xeric vegetation than in the mesic vegetation, as predicted by the hygrothermal stress hypothesis. The insect gall fauna was surveyed between December 2009 and June 2010 in two transects established each vegetation type. In total we found 186 insect gall morphotypes, distributed on 35 botanical families and 61 plant species. Cecidomyiidae (Diptera) induced the most insect galls (34.1%), and the plant family Fabaceae had the greatest richness of insect gall morphotypes (18). We recorded 99 insect gall morphotypes in the forest and 87 morphotypes...

Distribution pattern of herbivorous insects in a remnant of Brazilian Atlantic Forest Neotropical Entomology
Barbosa,Veralucia S.; Leal,Inara R.; Iannuzzi,Luciana; Almeida-Cortez,Jarcilene.
In this study we selected three habitats that correspond to a light gradient, and consequently a proportion of pioneer plant species gradient edges, trails and forest core and described their herbivorous insect assemblage. We tested five hypothesis about the herbivorous assemblage: (1) there is a different distribution of abundance and richness of order between habitats, (2) species similarity between habitats is smaller than within habitat, (3) in forest edge the herbivores are more abundant than in trails and interior of the forest, (4) in nuclear areas herbivore richness and diversity are higher than in the trails and edge, and (5) the abundance and richness of herbivores are different between seasons. Herbivorous were sampled during November 2000 - May...

Effects of climate, seasonality, and parasitoid abundance on Liriomyza Mik (Diptera: Agromyzidae) populations on important crops in Northeastern Brazil Iheringia, Sér. Zool.
Sousa,Viviane R. de; Paiva,Paulo C. de; Takiya,Daniela M.; Dias-Pini,Nívia da S.; Couri,Márcia S..
ABSTRACT Agromyzidae (Insecta: Diptera) is a cosmopolitan family of acalyptrate flies, with almost 3,000 species worldwide distributed. Most species are leaf miners on a large number of plants. Among them, Liriomyza Mik, 1894 is a large genus of leaf-miner species that can cause significant damage to economically important crops and is considered agricultural pests, such as Liriomyza sativae Blanchard, 1938 and Liriomyza huidobrensis (Blanchard, 1926), which are herein investigated. The present study deals with the impact of climatic factors (temperature, humidity, and precipitation), seasonality, and parasitoid abundance on leaf-miner infestation during one year in five cultivated crops in Northeastern Brazil. Climatic factors for instance had different...

Infestation of froghopper nymphs changes the amounts of total phenolics in sugarcane Scientia Agricola
Silva,Rafael José Navas da; Guimarães,Eduardo Rossini; Garcia,José Francisco; Botelho,Paulo Sérgio Machado; Ferro,Maria Inês Tiraboschi; Mutton,Miguel Angelo; Mutton,Márcia Justino Rossini.
The increased rate of sugarcane harvest without previous burn has provided a very favorable environment to the froghopper Mahanarva fimbriolata (Stal, 1854), with high moisture and low temperature variation. Few works have studied the response of sugarcane to this pest, so little is known about resistant cultivars. Plant phenolics are widely studied compounds because of their known antiherbivore effect. This research aims to determine if the attack of M. fimbriolata nymphs stimulates the accumulation of total phenolics in sugarcane. The experiment was carried out in greenhouse and arranged in completely randomized design, in a 3 X 2 X 4 factorial with three replications. Second instar nymphs of M. fimbriolata were infested at the following rates: control,...

Insect galls on Myrtaceae: richness and distribution in brazilian restingas Biota Neotropica
Maia,Valéria Cid.
Abstract: Inventories in Brazilian restingas have been indicating that Myrtaceae are the plant family with the greatest richness of insect galls. A compilation of published data plus new records was elaborated with the aim of stablishing the number of gall morphotypes on this family in this physiognomy of the Atlantic Forest, producing a list of galled species, pointing out the predominant gall features, evaluating the taxonomical knowledge of the gallers, listing the associated fauna, and based on host plant endemisms and monophagy proposing the endemism of some galling species. Myrtaceae harbor 111 morphotypes of insect gall (about 75% induced by Cecidomyiidae, Diptera) on 25 host plant species, 15 endemic. Eugenia L. highlights as the plant genus with...

Insects associated with syconia of Ficus citrifolia (Moraceae) in central Brazil Rev. Bras. entomol.
Costa,Priscila Canesqui da; Graciolli,Gustavo.
Insects associated with syconia of Ficus citrifolia in central Brazil. Fig trees present a diverse interaction with different groups of organisms. The inflorescence, or syconium, has characteristics that form a microenvironment in which interactions occur between fig trees and invertebrates. This study aimed to identify the insect fauna associated with the figs of Ficus citrifolia and to quantitatively describe the distribution pattern of the insects in the syconium, in an urban area in central Brazil. The syconia were used by 12 species of insects. Our results showed that the insects found on Ficus citrifolia presented a pattern of occurrence that depends on the composition of species found within each syconium.

New occurrence of non-pollinating fig wasps (Hymenoptera: Chalcidoidea) in Ficus microcarpa in Brazil Neotropical Entomology
Farache,Fernando H A; Ó,Vanessa T do; Pereira,Rodrigo A S.
Ficus microcarpa is an Asian fig tree that is ornamentally cultivated. The specific pollinator, Eupristina verticillata Waterston, and the non-pollinators Walkerella microcarpae Bouček and Philotrypesis emeryi Grandi, have been reported associated to F. microcarpa in Brazil. In here we report for the first time the occurrence of Odontofroggatia ishii Wiebes and Philotrypesis taiwanensis Chen et al in F. microcarpa in Brazil. Our results suggest that P. taiwanensis and O. ishii represent a recent influx of these wasps into Brazil. Considering that ~20 fig wasp species are associated with F. microcarpa in its native area, novel occurrences can be reported in the future in Brazil.

Positive relationship between soil fertility, plant diversity, and gall richness Biological Sciences
Melo Júnior, João Carlos Ferreira; Boeger, Maria Regina Torres; Isaias, Rosy Mary dos Santos; Arriola, Igor Abba; Lorenzi, Luciano; Mouga, Denise Monique Dubet da Silva; Vieira, Celso Voos.
The complexity of nutrient distribution patterns in soils is a determinant environmental component of the structure of plant communities. Numerous insect species that interact with plants are associated with these communities, and some of these interactions result in the formation of unusual structures called galls. In this study, we investigated the relationship of galls, soil fertility and plant communities in three vegetation types, herbaceous restinga (HR), shrub restinga (SR) and shrub-tree restinga (STR), in an area of restinga in southern Brazil. We identified 217 species belonging to 159 genera and 82 families. The plant diversity recorded in the STR was 42.8% higher than the diversity in the other vegetation types. Gall richness increased...

Serpentine leafminer (Liriomyza trifolii) on potato (Solanum tuberosum): field observations and plant photosynthetic responses to injury Ciência Rural
Bueno,Adeney de Freitas; Zechmann,Benjamin; Hoback,William Wyatt; Bueno,Regiane Cristina Oliveira de Freitas; Fernandes,Odair Aparecido.
Serpentine leafminers, Liriomyza spp. (Diptera: Agromyzidae), are polyphagous insects that feed on numerous crops worldwide including potato. Recently, leafminer larvae (Liriomyza trifolii) have become an economically important pest of potato. The larvae eat the mesophyll of leaflets leaving long winding tunnels inside the leaflets. The photosynthetic effects of larval tunneling on the remaining leaf tissue are unknown. In 2003, physiological responses of potato to leafminer, L. trifolii were evaluated in Kearney, Nebraska, USA. The leaflets were examined 7 and 14 days post infestation for leaf area injury, photosynthetic rates and fluorescence. Leafminers caused up to 13% leaf area loss due to leafminer injury with no effect on the photosynthetic rates of...
